Rattlers love the dunes and aren't above some jetty action either

Lots of people like jetty action - of one sort or another.
I know a lot about a little, and a little about a lot.

It really is. We saw several…and by we I mean our guide…I could not see them at all until he pointed them out explicitly

I'm bothered by not being able to easily pick out the business end of that.

They always sit coiled up like that on branches/vines with the head resting on the coiled body. They are slow to bite, relying heavily on camouflage, but will strike if you bump them.

Was this one of the guides at Manuel Antonio who takes a pic for you on your phone with their telescope thing?

We are in Arenal next to the volcano. Guide had a vortex spotting scope and yes I held my camera up to it. It wasn't very zoomed in, the snake was only 10-12 feet away, but it took a much better picture than phone alone. I brought my Bushnell binoculars with me which have been super handy during our treks. Saw 8 sloths yesterday! Here's a bonus pic, not a snake, but a strawberry poison dart frog that looks like Spider-Man.

PSA, from the resident snake guy on tigerdroppings (who justs photos/videos for education)

Quote:

Forgot to mention in my 2024 Snake Extravaganza thread…the very first snake - the rat snake - cost us $230 each on federal misdemeanor charges. Apparently in a national park, picking up a snake is "disturbing wildlife". I've been catching snakes at Jean Lafitte for almost 40 years and have never been told anything. No signs posted other than "Don't feed the gators"

I mean, all wildlife is protected in any National Wildlife Refuge. There are definitely signs there and at every park and it should be common sense to someone like that. That said, I've done the same thing as him, I just don't do videos or pics of myself handling anything.

I used to work in Resource Management for the NPS. This is something we wouldn't really have said anything about. Sounds pretty ridiculous.

Sounds like they are trying to go after the tourons and this guy got caught up in the heavier enforcement.

This little guy got lucky. Was digging up to fix a broken sprinkler. Daughter was excited to grab him. Not sure how he didn't get cut as I was digging.

I Sawzall'ed a bush out of my flowerbed and one popped up from around the root I was cutting last week. I have no idea how I didn't cut him to shreds.
