It likely came from outer space. So that's the first bit of info I can share.
Others will have to fill in the gaps in the story, if in fact there are gaps.

Looks legit. Good sized. What's it weigh? The iron ones are less valuable but can still get up there.

Thanks. It seems dense and metallic. It weighs 3-5/8 pounds. It is magnetic.

Magnetic as in it will stick to metal? Or a magnet will stick to it?

Sorry. A magnet sticks to it. So, it itself is not magnetic.

The little that I know about them, it's probably worth a few thousand. But dont take that as gospel.

Can't say much more than it is probably an iron/nickel meteorite. Unless you know when/where it was found, there's not much more to add. When/where might yield association to a particular collision event, as it could be a fragment of a bigger impact event. Otherwise it's an interesting object with some value for collectors.

From its appearance and the fact a magnet is attracted to it, yes it is very likely a iron meteorite?
The person who had it, where did they live? It may give a clue.
Odessa had a fairly large iron meteorite hit - 63,500 year ago. Many pieces have been found.
Arizona's meteor crater also had tons of iron fragments.
Here a 500lb fragment from Arizona.

Do not know. Purchased by my Dad (RIP) about 40 years ago. No record of purchase has been found. He was knowledgeable (geologist) and told me that it is a meteorite (but no details).

I think it's cool. Honestly, I don't know much about these things. But I gotta buddy who's an expert in meteorites. You mind if I call him down to the shop to take a look?
Best I can do is $50.
