I use my 2 year old daughter for weight on my hiking pack. I got a good workout and we get to spend quality time together. Win win.

Think about it GP...

You get some resistance training.

If you way 200 and wear a 20 lb vest - that is 10% more work, 40 - 20%.

If you walk 3X a week for 50 weeks - 10 extra weeks of work.

It's also a great/subtle reminder of exactly how much harder your body has to work with the extra weight.

If you slowly add on 20 pounds, it is less noticeable (if at all) the additional stress you are putting on your body.

Strap on a 20 pound vest and you're reminded of how big a difference it is in your exertion level vs. once you take it off. It was kind of eye opening. A good incentive to not add on an extra 20 pounds to carry around 24/7.

I've lost 15 lbs, and my mile jogging pace has dropped by a full 1:30/mile.

Great point. I was just thinking about that the other day while wearing a vest.

Makes perfect sense, my man.

No matter what I get 8k steps in a day at least. Does not matter what time of day, before I go to bed I tell myself I must get to 8k.

Thanks for the rec. Got the same set up. Definitely changes the game.

Just recently started walking and averaging about 9000 steps a day broken up into 3 times a day (7amish, 6pmish. 9pmish). My 9pm one has a 16 LB weighted vest.

I love it. It absolutely is a destressing mechanism.

That said, I need to up my shoe game. My toes are starting to hurt in my old nikes and I'm sure its a shoe issue. Any recs for 9-10k steps a day shoes?

I love Asics. I know a ton of people who like New Balance. If OO looks at this thread and responds, I'd take his advice.

Keep moving! I started running 50 years ago. Dropped 50 pounds over about six months. Ran around 45,000 miles over the next 45 years. Now at almost 86, I walk 2.1 miles daily. The 0.1 is for good measure. Have a streak going. This is day 980; goal is 1001 before taking off a day. _____4/22 update: Day number 1008.

I walk in Saucony Rides and love them. Can't go wrong with Asics or NB, though.

I wore NB for years (wide feet) but switched to Hoka Bondi 8s a few years ago. I buy two new pairs and 10 Seconds insoles every six months. I wear them ONLY for my daily 4 (5 on Sunday), alternately daily. At the end of 6 months, I replace them with new ones and retire the old ones to daily knock arounds. It's not cheap but figure it's cheaper than surgery and related rehab .

To those around New Braunfels that posted, check out the Sweaty Yeti 5K Trail Run on athleteguild.com. It is on June 1 in Landa Park. I did it last year and just registered for this year.

Maybe now you can live it up and gain 50 lbs. I would totally live vicariously through you.

Well done young man!

Go to a good shoe shop like Fleet Feet or Rogue running. They can tell you what type of shoe you need depending on your gait.

I like the New Balance 880s or Brooks Ghost.

Be cautious with the weighted vest. I used to walk wearing one and started having some issues with my knee and heal. Quit using it and they seem to have cleared up. That being said, I don't have any evidence it was the vest and it could also have been I was pushing it a bit going about 6 miles a walk.

Why not get custom orthotics that will last years and fit your feet exactly? The ones I make last 4-5 years and can be easily recovered for a minimal cost.

I've had feet and calf issues over the past year that were driving me nuts. Went to Fleet Feet a few months ago. They recommended New Balance. Total game changer. I typically walk 3 miles/day and 6 on Saturday.

Have also used these for day hikes up to 9 miles when traveling. Walking/hiking is fun again!

If you like saving money, check out joes new balance outlet. Most my shoe rotation is from that site.

Thanks! My issue is I wear a size 16 wide. They can be tough to find online.
