Can you imagine getting paid 9 figures to be a closer?!?!?

$20 million a year to come in and get 3 outs (typically) in 1/3 or 1/4 of a teams games.

That's like $750k per save.

Those Tommy the Trumpet fees aren't cheap. Makes sense to get a large contract to help pay for his entrance theme

This is the new version of the Chapman deal.

the problem with this contract...the Mets are not upgrading their team.

they're spending $100 MM to maintain what they have --- a team that could not get out of the wildcard round

I think the Astros showed the value of a great bullpen. The problem with a contract like this for a closer, though, is that they can fall apart incredibly quickly. It seems like it's fairly common for a guy to go from 40+ saves one season to losing his job the next. On the flip side, it's also very common for a guy to come from nowhere to being an All Star closer.

Doubt you get a response. If you do, it will be "laughing" at an owner who wants to win and actually uses some of his wealth to put into the team. Perhaps some additional snark about how Pressley is greater value considering production and cost.

Are the Mets your favorite team, or the Astros?

You've been white knighting the heck out of Cohen, and this one seems to be a bitter preemptive strike.

A bit of a freak accident might have turned this into a "4/100 M" deal.

oh, where were we on this thread?

insurance should cover his salary if he misses the entire season

going to take an "I told you so" on this one

Nice bump. Now someone is going to make the same mistake with Hader.

Just barely avoided 9 figures and $20 million per.

That was a close one.

My stance hasn't changed. Crane way overpaid. Just because it isn't a "deal" doesn't mean he isn't great. I am not mad about it. We extended Tuve, smashed into the tax, and will make a fair offer to Bregman soon.

I didn't realize at the time, but Diaz had some money deferred so Hader is more present value.
