Looking at meeting in-laws in Paris with kids. Am I foolish for considering? Mid-June is the target. Has anyone done it?

I wouldn't say foolish, but it will be hot/crowded. It'll likely just depend on how long your kids can hang in there. I did Paris with two under 9 and they were fine… but mine have also been all over the world their whole lives so they may not be a typical example. We hit all of the major stops except for museums… had to pass on those due to the kids.

Totally doable.

When our kids were about 8 and 10, we used this little scavenger hunt book on our trip to Paris. It added a bit of fun (and engagement) for them.

https://www.amazon.com/Mission-Paris-Scavenger-Adventure-Travel/dp/0989226743/ref=sr_1_1?crid=5FI74RFU88MA&keywords=paris+treasure+hunt+book&qid=1707591246&sprefix=paris+treasure+hunt+book%2Caps%2C143&sr=8-1

From the description:

"Mission Paris takes your young travelers through the famous sights of Paris, engaging them in an exciting scavenger hunt as you explore city landmarks together.

"Say 'au revoir' to a trip filled with the stress of keeping everyone entertained. Instead, say 'bonjour!' to a memorable family vacation. Imagine - your kids will be excited to sightsee (yes, even at museums!) as you discover the wonders of Paris as a family."

We also skipped the long museums and hit stuff we could do in an hour to 90 minutes (Picasso, Rodin).

I think it is doable for sure. The book suggested above is exactly what we have got. My girls will be 8 and 10. We are doing Paris this summer. Will probably not spend too much time in museums as I think they will get really bored. It is also been fun, there is a coloring book to help the kids learn French that has been a real big hit in our house.

If you send me a message, I can give you some ideas for Tours . We are taking a cooking class with our girls and also doing active activities.

I took my kids (8 and 10) to Paris last year. The main trip was London, but my daughter wanted to see the Eiffel Tower for her tenth birthday. We skipped museums (my wife and I had already seen them.) We visited the Catacombs which my son loved. Just walking around browsing and eating at cafes was great with the kids for a couple of days. They loved it.

While beautiful, the Eiffel Tower area did seem sketchy after dark. And we're not the type to be overly paranoid while traveling.

100% doable. Just set your expectations. You shouldn't plan to spend hours at the Louvre or racing from thing to thing. Enjoy the food, playing in parks and find things to see. You'll lock into reservations at a few places (Eiffel Tower, Saint Chapelle, etc) but leave lots of time to take a break and explore. If you aren't used to travelling like that, you may initially think you're wasting a trip. That's not the case. Its just a different trip. And it'll be a surprise how much they show you.

Also, the first night is hard when you land. Take it easy and have low expectations but wear them out so they crash. Go easy the first morning.

Do some research on "best croissant" "oldest pastry shop" "giant meringues" etc and make finding those an adventure. When your kids turn the corner and see the window of Richard Bertrand, get a cup of hot chocolate at Angelina, or see the Eiffel tower sparkle at night, you'll be glad you are there with them.

Plus you've got family there so you can get a date night. In Paris. Boom. Another kid.

Thank you, everyone for your replies. I got busy and forgot about my post. These are all great suggestions and we will work on implementing some of that. We did have a small wrench thrown in our plans this week but I'm still looking to try and pull it off.

We had a great time in Paris with our two boys who were 13 and 9 at the time. We did go to the louvre - I hired a private tour guide. It was crowded and hot AF, but worth it I guess. We did a city tour as well on a tuktuk which was great. Agree on giving them some say in the trip - we spent a good amount of time searching for the best croissant and certain flavors of prime only available in Europe - also some sneaker shopping. They played basketball on some courts at the park in front of the Eiffel with French kids. We really enjoyed our time in Paris.
