I got into a discussion this weekend with a guy in the pro-shop about Course Slope and Rating being subjective, and in some cases wildly incorrect.
I'm not saying the system is completely flawed, but this weekend I experienced a live example of how Course Slope and Rating is off.
Woodbridge Golf Club - Blue Tees - 71.9/128
Pecan Hollow - Blue Tees - 71.2/127
If you've played both courses, you understand that on any given hole at Woodbridge there's nowhere to bail-out. There's water on 14 of the 18 holes, and most of the holes have one (or both) side(s) of the entire hole protected by thick trees and brush ~10-20 yards right or left of the fairway. In some cases you hit what you think is a good shot and you've lost a ball.
On the other hand, you've got Pecan Hollow. It's a wide open course with plenty of bail-out room on on both sides of each hole. The fairways are parallel to each other, so, if you have a big miss off the tee, you're taking a wedge and hitting over the trees separating fairways for your GIR.
If you've played both of these courses you understand that the greens at Woodbridge are very undulating with multiple shelves. If you hit a GIR in the wrong part of a green at Woodbridge you're glad to walk off with a 3 putt.
At Pecan Hollow the greens are flat, with the exception of 1 or 2 that are undulated. Rarely should you ever 3 putt.
I played both courses this last weekend in similar conditions. Some of the balls I hit at Pecan would have been OB at Woodbridge.
Needless to say, my score at Pecan Hollow was reflective of what I would consider an easier course. For those that have played both courses, in your opinion, are the course's similar Slope and Course Ratings accurate?
I think Pecan Hollow is rated higher than it should be and Woodbridge is rated much lower than it should be.
