This issue is airport and even time of day specific. In heavily utilized Clear airports pre-check can be faster. In other airports, Clear is faster.

At DAL, I've seen many times where general security is faster than pre-check because so many business people have pre-check that depending on time of day pre-check can get overloaded. I've been in a pre-check queue at DAL wrapped about 3 times when general is totally empty.

Clear annoys the crap outta me. I have Pre-TSA and Global Entry. It's fine if Clear wants to operate and charge people to get through quicker. It's the American way. If I thought I needed it, I would join. But they just walk to the front of pre-TSA and barge in. Screw that, get your own line. Charge people whatever you want and pay an extra TSA agent to be just for Clear.
You're just pissed that what you paid for (gubmint version) isn't as good at what I paid for (private industry version).

And paid for is somewhat incorrect, since my AMEX gives me a credit to cover it...

No. I'm not. I'm all for Clear. I think it's a great idea. Just get your own lane. If you are going to offer a product, then be full service. Stop sponging off the line that's already there. It's not complicated.
Doesn't TSA have to run the actual SECURITY part, though? Checking the IDs and running the scanners? How does Clear force TSA to open up a new lane?

And? Clear can pay to have a separate line with a TSA agent. You want to run a business, stop sponging off the airport.

How does Clear pay for something that TSA probably won't sell?

Clear can run their own security lane.
Some airports have private, non-TSA, security.
That's the issue. Clear bypasses the tsa ID check then still uses the TSA screening.

I don't think clear bypasses the TSA ID check. It just gets you to the front of the line waiting in the ID check. Think you Still gotta have the TSA agent stare at you like they hate their job and wave you up to scan boarding/show passport/ID.

well dang maybe I'm not getting all my clear benefits. I feel like I usually still have to show the TSA agent something before entering the security line process. 1) clear process (fingerprints or eyes and showing boarding pass etc); 2) skip to front of line and get to TSA agent (that I thought checks something??); 3) past TSA agent to security line. will pay more attention next time. Maybe it is just because i volunteer my boarding pass/ID to the TSA agent anyway

Once you confirm ID at Clear kiosk you only need to flash the boarding pass at TSA.

There are only 21 commercial airports where TSA is not handling the security and half of those are piss ant airports. An airport has to apply to a program to have a private company do this instead of TSA and then that company has to obviously follow TSA regs and is under oversight of TSA.

So it's probably not that easy for Clear to run their own security lane. I don't recall if it's an all or nothing thing with the private company running security and if they can further sub out a security lane just for Clear.

So airports are switching to ID and away from boarding pass. I haven't had my BP looked at in over a year including out of CRP.

gotchya; I couldn't remember what the TSA agent checked so I incorrectly interpreted it to mean the ability to skip the TSA agent completely after skipping to the front of the line. Mea culpa. I just generally think of clear as the ability to skip to the line to get the TSA agent quicker - whether he is looking at my ID while I scan the boarding pass isn't the real game changer (to me).

seems like some places do have a dedicated TSA precheck line so clear folks (without TSA pre) wouldn't skip in front of them (only skip in front of non clear)?

Clear checked your biometrics and connects it with your boarding pass that it also scans. You're then escorted to the TSA agent. You present your boarding pass to him. There's no way he can read it.

It makes no sense that the Clear agent is authenticating my identity and that I'm the one with a confirmed boarding pass, and I still have to flash my boarding pass to TSA again. Just let me walk by the TSA agent with no interaction with me -- just the Clear agent who should prove he is who he says he is to the TSA agent. There's your new security issue.

Depends on the airport, and the day.
Sometimes TSA is only checking ID and sometime they need boardingnpass too.

Depends on airport for sure. I've flown out of DAL, CRP, LAX, and AUS and none ask for BP anymore. I also fly exclusively pre-check.

I know that quite well. I DO like the fact that CRP doesn't make you take electronics out of the carryon. For awhile I would have a work laptop, macbook, and ipad...that was a PITA at airports. It's nice just sending the backpack through without pulling all the **** out of it.

I just looked and Clear can do your TSA Precheck **** online. You'd just fill out some stuff the next time you fly at the Clear line. Then...best of both worlds.

Even better when both Clear AND TSA Pre are things my CCs give me credit for.

They used to compare ID to BP. I was held up once because my BP had my middle name instead of my first name.

Why check just your ID? To compare the pic to your face?

I get that they really shouldn't care if you are flying since they are putting you through the security check regardless, so not checking BP makes sense.
