Would really like to start looking into my roots. Figured someone in here might have a good recommendation for genealogy specialist.

Following. I've got a years long roadblock with my great grandfather on my dad's side. Born in 1871 along the German/French border . Which understandably is causing issues. The dude shows up getting married in Illinois in 1895. Nothing before that.

Descendents on my mom's side came from that area. Do you know where he immigrated to? I think New York, New Orleans, Galveston were all fairly common ports. This may not help, but I had a few clues. One was my ggg grandmothers birth certificate from Plaine de Valsch, France



From that document, I knew my gggg grandfather's name was Balthazard Henriot. From word of mouth, I knew they came to New Orleans in the 1820's to 1830's. I just started going through the ship logs that came through New Orleans and found B Henriot and his family listed. These were all free listings. I didn't pay for Ancestry or any of those websites. Good luck!. The biggest thing is to have a clue. You seem to know his name, the next thing is to discover his immigration point.

He moved to La Salle, Il around the time the Sanitation Canal was built. I suspect from family lore that he went through New York or Montreal. He met his wife at the Chicago Worlds Fair in 1893 and married in 1895. My folks have done the DNA Ancestry stuff and we're connected to a Bubel family in Rocherster, NY. So the name is still legit. I've traced them back (5-6 cousins) - I've met one by coincidence at the Rec Center at A&M during my time checking ID's at the turnstiles, and they're from the Saarland area of Germany. (Now) With deep roots in Alsace-Lorraine.

A lot of stories line up with that region and the name shows up in searches not infrequently. I just can't get get anywhere with it. SO CLOSE.

Census data doesn't have an immigration date that ever repeats either. It's been fun, but frustrating. I'm about at the level of emailing Catholic Churches in the region asking for information. I have a hunch what towns I should be looking at. My Pop is 85 and the last of his immediate family so I kind of want to piece this together as soon as possible.
