Well, I was lying.

One game to go in English championship promotion race. The top 2 teams get promoted automatically to the EPL. The next 4 teams go to the playoffs to vie for the remaining spot. The final regular season matches are this Saturday, May 4.


Big win for Ipswich Town today 2-1 over Coventry. They are looking good for the auto promotion to EPL. Both Ipswich and Leeds have struggled down the stretch. It was the first win in 5 games for Ipswitch. Leeds has been in poor form but even worse down the stretch L, W, L, D, L. Leeds has to be kicking themselves right now.

Three match days remain in the EPL and we have a pretty good battle on our hands for the final spot in next year's Premier League. Three teams are fighting for one more spot, and all three still have a realistic chance of avoiding relegation.

This Weekend's Relegation Matches

Friday
Luton Town v. Everton (2pm, Kenilworth Road, Peacock). Everton are happy to no longer be in the relegation battle, but the Blues will still have a say in the relegation fight as they travel to Luton for a Friday evening clash. This is really a must win game for Luton, as the Hatters will not have a better opportunity to claim three points for the rest of the season. Everton have earned their way out of the relegation battle, going 4-1-0 over their last five, a run that included wins over three fellow relegation battlers and Liverpool. Winning three 6 pointers was certainly the key to their safety. Luton have only managed one win over their last 5, so that run has kept the Hatters in 18th position, looking up at safety. Luton did claim a 2-1 win over the Toffee's when the clubs met at Goodison in September, so they will be looking for more of the same in what should be a raucous Kenilworth Road.

Saturday
Burnley v. Newcastle (9am, Turf Moor, Peacock). The Clarets will welcome Newcastle to Burnley on Saturday in a clash with meaning for both clubs, but for different reasons. Newcastle will enter the match on a run of form that has seen the Toons go 3-1-1 in their last five for 10 points. That form has Newcastle in the hunt for European position for next season, currently in 7th place. Burnley have also been in good form as of late, losing only one match in their last 5 (1-1-3 for 6 points). It is a run that has the Clarets dreaming about avoiding relegation, as they now sit only 2 points behind 17th place Nottingham Forest. Newcastle claimed a 2-0 win at St. James' Park in September.

Sheffield United v. Nottingham Forest (9am, Bramall Lane, USA Network). Forest will make the short drive up the M1 to Sheffield to face a club who has been officially relegated, and who might just have a little weight off their back now that their fate is secured. Neither club comes into the match in good form (Sheffield 0-4-1 in their last 5 and Forrest 1-4-0 over the same stretch) which has resulted in the Blades securing early relegation and Forest fighting for their EPL lives. Should be a lively encounter on Saturday as Forest will see this as a must win game.

I hope way day we can get Oldham Athletic back in the Football League. Their story is really sad. They were once a premier league team.

Results this weekend did not go well if you enjoy a wild relegation battle finish, with Forest pulling away from Luton and Burnley a bit. Luton really had an opportunity at home to get three points, but credit to Everton who went into Kenilworth Road and really battled with the Hatters. Burnley dropped an egg, no other way to put it, and Forest did what they needed to do against Sheffield.

Weekend Results:

Luton Town 1-1 Everton. Luton Town missed a chance to escape the Premier League's bottom three after Friday's hard-fought 1-1 draw with Everton at Kenilworth Road. A victory would have seen the Hatters climb out of the bottom 3, at least temporarily. Elijah Adebayo cancelled out Dominic Calvert-Lewin's 24th-minute penalty in an entertaining first half and neither side could find a winner in an end-to-end second period. Despite an encouraging performance, Luton who almost snatched a late victory stay 18th and below Forest.

Burnley 1-4 Newcastle. Burnley's hopes of a great escape took a huge blow as they were hammered 4-1 by Newcastle United at Turf Moor. Having gone unbeaten in three Premier League matches heading into Saturday's encounter, Burnley had hoped to leapfrog Luton Town into 18th. Yet their safety hopes are now dangling by a thread after Newcastle played beautifully and took a three-goal lead by half-time. Alexander Isak atoned for a penalty miss by scoring his 20th league goal of the season early in the second half, with Dara O'Shea grabbing a late consolation for Burnley. Burnley are two points behind 18th-placed Luton, who themselves are three behind 17th-placed Forest.

Sheffield United 1-3 Nottingham Forest. Nottingham Forest climbed further above the relegation zone with a 3-1 victory over Sheffield United. Chris Wilder's men took the lead through Ben Brereton-Diaz's penalty kick, but the visitors roared back to score three goals in a row. Callum Hudson-Odoi completed a brace for Forest after Ryan Yates had put them in front. Forest remain 17th but this win takes them three points clear of Luton Town in 18th.

Luton lose3-1 to West Ham, so they are three points behind Forest with one game to play and a -13 goal differential. Their done.

All three promotion clubs will go straight back down.
