How long do you want to ignore this user?
Piggybacking of Lance's work in the previous thread, I'm starting a new thread to keep everything up-to-date and organized.

Players will be listed alphabetical by last name in each of the following categories:

Active MLB Players
Active MiLB Players by Level
Active Independent/Foreign League Players

Retired MLB Players
Retired MiLB/Independent/Foreign League Players

Each player will be listed as follows:

Active MLB Player: Last Name, First Name (Years on Texas A&M Roster) - Current Team - Links (see below)
Active MiLB Player: Last Name, First Name (Years on Texas A&M Roster) - Current Team/MLB Affiliate - Links (see below)
Active Independent/Foreign Player: Last Name, First Name (Years on Texas A&M Roster) - Current Team/League Affiliation - Links (see below)
Retired Player: Last Name, First Name (Years on Texas A&M Roster) - Links (see below)

An * after Years on Texas A&M Roster will designate a player that was not drafted/signed out of Texas A&M; i.e. those players that transferred to a different school or were only students at Texas A&M
A bolded name in the Active MiLB section means that player has reached the MLB level previously

Links:
MLB - MLB profile
MiLB - MiLB profile
BR - Baseball Reference profile
BC - Baseball Cube profile
FL - Foreign League Profile

Each profile offers something different, so I will try to link all of them where I can.

Continued on Post #4

Note 1: Baseball Reference lists this player as just "Bell", but the team and time period correspond with what A&M has listed.
Note 2: Texas A&M lists an A.B. Buchanan that lettered in 1941. Baseball reference has an A.W. Buchanan that played for the Bridgeport Bees in 1947 at the age of 28 and attended A&M; this would put A.W. Buchanan at 22 in 1941 which makes sense. I believe there is a good possibility that these are the same person.
Note 3: A&M lists Lance Cobb as having signed with the Denver Bears, an independent league team. The Denver Bears during the 1960s were a AAA affiliate of the Minnesota Twins/Washington Senators, and Cobb is not listed on any of their rosters.
Note 4: I believe all 3 Baseball Reference links are A&M's William Couser. A&M lists his name as William L. Couser where several of the links list him as William T. Couser; however, the teams and time period correspond with what A&M has listed.
Note 5: Texas A&M lists John as John W. DeWitt while Baseball Reference says his name is John U. DeWitt; pretty good chance these are the same person though
Note 6: Not sure why, but both Baseball Reference and Baseball Cube have different entries for a James Glenn and a Simon Glenn. Both sets of links should be the same James "Simon" Glenn from Texas A&M.
Note 7: James Hackney is the first documented professional baseball player out of Texas A&M.
Note 8: I believe this is the same Harbin as Texas A&M's J.E. Harbin, but this is just a guess due to proximity of location and timeline. Texas A&M says that he initially signed with the Galveston Sand Crabs, but I cannot find any records of him actually playing for them.
Note 9: Both links should be Rosewell Higginbotham as he signed in 1921 with the Paris Snappers out of Texas A&M.
Note 10: Full name is Ronald Martin "Bubba" Jackson. Baseball Cube is combining 2 different Ron Jacksons in their profile.
Note 11: Baseball Reference has an entry for both a C.S. Lewis and a Judd Lewis, both of which should be A&M's C.S. "Judd" Lewis.
Note 12: Baseball Cube has an entry for Cordell Lindsey and Dell Lindsey, both of which are A&M's Cordell Lindsey.

Other Notes: Baseball Reference has a list of Texas A&M Pro Players (Link), but I do not think this list is accurate. The list includes such MLB players as Ernie Koy, Bob O'Brien, and David Clyde. Ernie Koy was a big name at t.u. where he starred on their baseball and football teams, and his sons starred on their football teams; I do not think he attended Texas A&M even in a student capacity. Bob O'Brien and David Clyde may have been students at one point, but I can't verify that although Clyde was committed to Texas A&M before taken 1st overall in the 1973 draft. At some point I may go through their additional names and see if I can verify anyone as being an Aggie.

Note 13: Texas A&M's A.B. Morris lettered in 1923 while the Baseball Reference link has a line for 1922; not sure if this is the same player or an error.
Note 14: A&M lists George Smith as having signed in 1907 with the Galveston Sand Crabs of the Texas League. The first BR link lists George Franklin Polk Smith as a 19 year-old pitcher for the 1907 Galveston Sand Crabs but does not have any collegiate affiliation. The second BR link lists George Arthur Smith as hailing from Texas A&M but lists him as a hitter with both the 1908 Oakland Oaks of the Pacific Coast League and the 1908 Galveston Sand Crabs of the Texas League. I don't know which or how much of each link is correct.
Note 15: The Texas A&M Media Guide lists him as having signed with Seattle in 1979, but BR and BC do not have any record of such.

Thanks for putting in this effort, OP.

For some of our recent guys:

Nice to see Michael Helman in AAA, he seems to be having a strong career so far. Jozwiak is putting together some nice outings and has looked really impressive at times

I've seen Bryce Miller throw a few times this Spring so far and man he's been impressive

Looking forward to following along with everyone, this is a big help!

Vaughn Grissom came into the spring as the odds on favorite to be the Opening Day shortstop and was thought to be competing with Orlando Arcia. However, 2019 first round pick Braden Shewmake is apparently making a late push. Shewmake has seen a lot of playing time of late and has held his own. Brian Snitker told MLB.com's Mark Bowman Saturday that it will likely be one of Grissom or Shewmake who heads north with the club.

Shewmake would be the first Aggie position player to make his MLB debut since Naquin in 2015.

By my calculations, Brooks Raley is oldest Ag in the Bigs, and Tyler Naquin is the oldest in the minors.

Not counting Lew Ford who didn't play here.

Shortstop (1): Braden Shewmake

Choosing between Shewmake and Grissom feels like picking a No. 8 vs. No. 9 game in the NCAA tourney. Shewmake is the better defensive option. He might benefit from another month or two of at-bats at the Triple-A level. But with Grissom not playing shortstop for a fourth straight day on Saturday, I'll follow the clues and trust my gut.

An * after Years on Texas A&M Roster will designate a player that was not drafted/signed out of Texas A&M; i.e. those players that transferred to a different school or were only students at Texas A&M

Are there any players who were only students at Texas A&M first, before going on to play professional baseball? I recall Mark Johnson not being a fan of walk-ons, and a few good students playing club baseball never getting a chance at the team but eventually getting shots at a tryout with a professional team.

Roy McMillan came to A&M hoping to make the football team, but left and eventually signed with the Reds after never playing baseball before: https://sabr.org/bioproj/person/roy-mcmillan/

A handful of names that played professional baseball before enrolling at A&M would be Troy Neel, came to A&M to play football, Kyle Kessel, came to A&M to play basketball, and Mark Farris, came to A&M to play football. All were drafted or signed before coming to A&M.

The only plausible explanation I've seen to send both Shewmake and Grissom down is the Braves are manipulating their service time

  • Daniel Mengden signed a minor league contract with the Royals and was assigned to AAA
  • Jace Vines signed a minor league contract with the Phillies and was assigned to AAA

We got reports that Shewmake had a shot to be Atlanta's opening day starter at shortstop, but he and his competitor Vaughn Grissom were optioned to AAA in favor of Orlando Arcia, who had been performing well before suffering a micro-fracture in his wrist. Now, Shewmake has a potential opening with tons of injuries and poor production in Atlanta's lineup.

Most of the woes Atlanta is dealing with come from the DH and left field spots, where Shewmake would undoubtedly be able to fill in.

Lacy, the Royals' No. 15 prospect per MLB Pipeline, still has a few more weeks in Arizona before the Royals will discuss sending him to an affiliate. For now, he's throwing bullpens, then will progress to live sessions, likely in the next week to 10 days. On Tuesday, he threw two sets of 15 pitches, sitting down in between to simulate an inning in a game. Lacy's second set featured a stand-in dummy to simulate a hitter.

Quote:

Seattle also will re-slot its rotation and push its other starters back to allow Miller to debut against last-place Oakland rather than the 2022 World Series champion Astros on Friday, when the spot was due up next.

A fourth-round pick out of Texas A&M in 2021, Miller took the biggest leap in the organization in '22, climbing three Minor League affiliates while jumping from No. 24 to No. 2 in the Mariners' prospect rankings.
https://www.mlb.com/mariners/news/bryce-miller-mariners-callup?t=mlb-pipeline-coverage

Quote:

Miller had a legitimate four-pitch mix, starting with a high-spin fastball that averaged 95 mph and touched triple digits in Double-A last year. His hard slider was a true out pitch at times and provided a different look with a slower, truer curve, and both breaking pitches missed bats. His changeup featured some impressive sink and he did a good job of getting ground-ball outs as well.

But that was last year, you might proclaim. He clearly hasn't been as sharp this season. Au contraire. This is where the numbers you see online don't match his performance. Miller's stuff has been just as electric, just as precise. His four-seamer has been 95-99 mph with plus command and at least plus ride up in the zone. That 86-89 mph slider has plus action and he can throw it for strikes to hitters on both sides of the plate. He's scrapped the curve for a distinct "second slider," a sweepy pitch across the bottom of the zone that acts as a premium swing-and-miss pitch. The changeup is an upper-80s above-average offering with depth and fade.

Will debut today vs the Oakland A's at 8:40pm CST

I finally finished the retired players sections, so please let me know if I missed anyone, wrongfully included someone, have a broken link, or any other typos.

I also included a leaderboard list to the end of the first post just for fun.

  • Wacha and Stripling are climbing the leaderboard in career wins and strikeouts
  • Naquin could move up the HR list if he can crack the Brewer's lineup
  • If another Aggie gets called up to the majors, or Hendrix, Mengden, or Naquin make it back, there would be 8 Aggies on rosters this season which would be a 4 way tie for 3rd most all-time
  • Once Wacha completes his contract with the Padres, he should be 1st all-time among Aggies with 14 seasons on a major league roster
