Well I hope Blake gets it's going. He only hit .265 at Temple this year. Not great at the JUCO level, and now going on a hot streak to get to .221 in the summer doesn't bode well for making any kind of impact for the Aggies.

Gandy Stubblefield after giving up only 3 runs in his 1st 14 relief appearances has given up 7 runs in his last 4.

G.R. Hinsley went 4 for 4 (2 doubles) plus a walk tonight.

J.B. Moss is hitting 0.154 for Victoria. He did have a strong inning on the mound, first since high school.

Rochester's Matt Kent went 9 innings for a no decision in an 11 inning game ... 7 hits 1 walk 6 Ks and 3 runs including a 2 run homerun.

(Rochester, Minn.)– In the Honkers’ final regular season home game of the summer, Reid Roper (Illinois) caps a sensational career with the Honkers after a magical performance at Mayo Field Wednesday night, boosting the Honkers to a 6-3 win on a walk-off home run in extra innings.

The game’s starters Nick Jensen-Clagg (Kent State) and Matt Kent (Texas A&M) pitched a couple of scoreless innings to start the game, but the Rox grabbed the first lead of the contest in the third.

Kent had scattered four hits in the game when he stared down Chris Paul (California-Berkeley) with a runner on second base and two out. Paul ripped a double deep off of the right center field wall to score the game’s first run and the Rox led 1-0.

The Honkers finally earned their first hit off Jensen-Clagg in the bottom of the fifth inning, a single from Jordan Smith (Minnesota). Immediately following Smith’s single to left, Corey Hassel (Oklahoma State) grounded a double all the way to the left field corner, scoring Smith from first base and tying the game at one.

Later in the fifth, the Honkers loaded the bases with two outs and Alex Schultz (Nebraska Omaha) at the plate, but Jensen-Clagg pitched out of the jam, striking out Schultz and minimizing the damage.

The game stayed knotted at one until the top of the seventh inning when Will Craig (Wake Forest) smacked a two-run home run over the left field wall off Kent to push the Rox into the lead, 3-1.

Schultz got another chance with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning with one away, this time he walked, scoring the second Honkers run of the game. Following Schultz’s walk, Reid Roper grounded into an RBI fielder’s choice to tie the game back up at three, scoring brother Ryne Roper (Illinois). Reid’s RBI gave him 100 in his Honkers career, making him the Honkers’ all-time leader in RBIs.

Jordan Smith led off the bottom of the eighth with a double pulled down the first base line off reliever Kevin Burgee (Georgia State). Corey Hassel’s bunt was perfectly placed and he beat out the would-be sacrifice out to put runners on first and third base with nobody out. But Burgee pitched out of the scoring threat unscathed, keeping the game tied.

Matt Kent finished the ninth with the tie in place, but the Honkers couldn’t win it in the bottom half of the inning, ending Kent’s bid for the late win. Kent finished the night pitching nine innings, allowing three runs on seven hits, one walk and eight strikeouts.

And it was stuck at 3-3 all the way until the 11th inning. With two outs, reliever Will Craig walked Tanner Buenting (Iowa Central Community College) and Alex Schultz with Reid Roper at the plate. Fittingly, Reid wrapped up his final regular season game at Mayo Field with a walk-off home run way over the right center field fence, giving the Honkers the 6-3 win – and after pitching a scoreless top-half of the 11th in relief, Ryne Roper is credited with the game’s win.

The Honkers have no more games left to play at home in 2014, but they still have four more games to play this week; two with Mankato and two more with Alexandria. A little more of the magic we saw tonight could get the Honkers into the playoffs. You can follow the remainder of the Honkers’ season on YouTube by subscribing to the official Northwoods League channel. For more information about the Rochester Honkers, visit rochesterhonkers.com.

Pitcher of the week ...

1. Matt Kent, Rochester Honkers (LW: 1)

Kent took the top pitching spot for the second consecutive week as the Texas A&M southpaw has been a star for the Honkers. The 6'0" lefty leads the league in innings pitched (75.2) and has posted an amazing 2.09 ERA. He's also turned in two complete games and has 69 strikeouts- which lead the league- to just 10 walks. Nine of his 11 starts have been quality starts and five of them he's allowed just one earned run or less. He struck out two in a 1-2-3 inning for the North in the Big League Dreams showcase.

Northwoods League Announces Postseason All-Stars
Aug 10, 2014

Rochester, Minn. – The Northwoods League announced the 2014 Postseason All-Star Team and award winners on Sunday, August 10. In addition to the 31 players that were selected to the honorary team, Madison first baseman Pete Alonso was named the league’s Most Valuable Player and Rochester’s Matt Kent and Kalamazoo’s Ryan Smoyer were named Co-Pitchers of the Year as voted by the League’s coaches and members of the media. Mankato led all teams with four players selected. The Lakeshore Chinooks, the top team in this year’s regular season, swept the coaching awards.

Madison Mallards first baseman Pete Alonso (Florida) caps off an impressive season in the Northwoods League with the MVP award. Alonso, a freshman, started off the season going 11 for 24 (.458) with a home run and 10 RBI in his first five games and hasn’t looked back. He was named the Star of Stars (MVP) of the 2014 All-Star Game by going 1 for 3 with a home run and 3 RBI. Alonso is currently second in the league in home runs (18), fourth in RBI (53), and fourth in batting average (.354). Alonso is a native of Tampa, Florida.

Rochester Honkers left-handed pitcher Matt Kent (Texas A & M) was named the Northwoods League’s Co-Pitcher of the Year. Kent, a sophomore, has pitched well the entire season and only allowed three runs or more three times during the season. His most dominant stretch of the season occurred during three starts in mid-July. Kent started three games during that time and went 2-0 while allowing only one earned run over 23 innings. He also struck out 18 batters and only walked one. Kent carries a 3-3 record in 11 starts and has struck out 69 batters while walking 10 in 77.2 innings pitched this season. He was also selected for the midseason All-Star game as well as the Big League Dreams Showcase. Appearing for the North in game one of the showcase he pitched one inning and struck out two batters. Kent hails from Waco, Texas.

Kalamazoo Growlers right-handed pitcher Ryan Smoyer (Notre Dame) joins Kent as the Northwoods League’s Co-Pitcher of the Year. Smoyer, a sophomore, was also a mid-season All-Star and has shined since he arrived in Kalamazoo. Starting on June 15, Smoyer began an amazing run of five straight starts with a win. During those games he didn’t allow more than three runs in a game and walked only eight batters. He is the league leader in wins with eight and his only loss of the year was to Kenosha on July 26 where he allowed four unearned runs in 7.2 innings pitched. Smoyer is from Bowling Green, Ohio.

Both Kent and Smoyer along with Alonso are among the 31 players selected to the NWL’s Postseason All-Star team. The league leading four All-Stars from Mankato are led by outfielder Tyler Sullivan (Pacific) who is currently the league leader in stolen bases with 36 while hitting .357 and MoonDogs shortstop Peter Maris (UC Santa Barbara) a mid-season All-Star and Big League Dreams Showcase selection. They are joined by MoonDogs first baseman Levi Scott (UT Arlington) and All-Star closer and Big League Dreams selection Tyler Mark (Cal State Dominguez Hills).

Selected from the Waterloo Bucks is infielder Pat MacKenzie (Central Michigan). MacKenzie is currently tied with Wisconsin Rapids mid-season and postseason All-Star shortstop Zack Domingues (Long Beach State) for the league lead with a .376 batting average heading into the final game of the regular season. Pat Porter (Ohio State) of the Kenosha Kingfish has also been selected. Porter currently leads the league with 62 RBI.

Lakeshore’s third-year manager Eddy Morgan is the 2014 Manager of the Year after leading the Chinooks to the best record in the league, currently at 49-21. Morgan’s assistant coach Mark Moriarty earned the award for 2014 Coach of the Year in the Northwoods League.

In other awards, Lakeshore’s Kapco Park was voted as the field with the Best Playing Surface.

Mike Coleman of the Kalamazoo Growlers, Micah Schroeder of the La Crosse Loggers and Josh Horton of the Mankato MoonDogs, were recognized by their peers as Co-Play-by-Play Announcers of the Year.

Top 200 Prospects of the Northwoods League:

4. Matt Kent, lhp, Rochester (RS) Jr., Texas A&M)
With excellent control and several off speed pitches to set up his fastball, Kent dominated throughout
the summer. He made 11 starts for the Honkers, his third stint with Rochester, but first as a starter. Kent throws three pitches for strikes and racked up 69 Ks in 77.2 innings, earning co-top pitcher honors. He served as a bullpen option for the Aggies the past two years after redshirting, but a move to the rotation awaits. He posted a 2.08 ERA and went deep into games, making six starts of seven innings or more. Managers ranked the southpaw as one of the top pitchers in terms of control, as evidenced by his nearly 7-to-1 K/BB ratio. He has three off speed pitches, including a plus curve, which set up his fastball, which isnt overpowering as hes not a big guy. He stands at just 6ft 175 pounds. However, his slender, athletic build allow Kent to have a fluid delivery and get good extension, which makes him very projectable on the mound. Kent has good feel of the strike zone and holds runners well, with some managers discussing his pickoff move as one of the best in the league.

19. Ryne Birk, 2b, La Crosse (So., Texas A&M)
Birk was arguably the best defensive second basemen in the league - he didnt commit an error in 47 games. The rising sophomore at Texas A&M also hit the ball well, ranking sixth in the league with a .340 batting average. He hit .306 in his first collegiate action with the Aggies in the spring, and only continued his success. Hes an everyday guy, one manager said. He loves to play and put the barrel on the bat more than anyone. Birk also showcased speed, swiping 11 bases, and patience as he drew 36 walks to 34 strikeouts.

58. Mark Ecker, rhp, La Crosse (S0., Texas A&M)
Despite joining at mid season, Ecker still made an impression with the coaches throughout the league. He has an electric arm with big upside, one manager said of the Aggie righty who only threw 16 innings throughout the summer. He has a low 90s fastball and showed flashes of a swing and miss slider. Ecker struck out four in just five innings of work as a freshman with Texas A & M, but then was lights out as a Logger. He made one start, and struck out 21 in 16 innings. He has a simple delivery, and a slow overall pace but he stays on line and has a quick, loose and strong arm.

It is good to see Kent get some hype over the summer, he has always been reliable for RC. I still expect to see him mainly in relief this spring. With his control it is hard not to have him ready if needed in relief.

I expect Birk to have a Banks like year if given regular playing time. Good to see he produced well this summer.

I thought Ecker had transferred to San Jac. Could be wrong but I remember somebody left after the season.

How about other team losses (other than draftees and seniors). Anybody hear anything?

I'm surprised if Gandy was cut as we should have enough room on the roster for everyone unless there are some new players that I haven't heard about. Maybe that's why his summer performance dropped off towards the end of summer.

Rosters should be out soon as the players are actively working out.
